I’m really pleased to announce that we finally have a subscription to ARTstor, a large collection of images for research and teaching purposes.

According to the ARTstor web site, the collection includes images in the areas of art, architecture, the humanities, and social sciences. There’s also a set of tools to view, present, and manage images.

Our new database: Poiesis, offers indexing to a growing number of philosophy journals and online full text access to a select number of titles. Every word in every available issue is fully searchable, including thousands of articles, book reviews, and dissertation listings, as well as all abstracts, footnotes, and bibliographic listings. Poiesis includes journals published by philosophical societies, departments, university presses, and commercial publishers in several countries.

Our new database Literature Resource Center – LRC,  will be valuable for the introductory literature classes; it contains the full text of several core monographic literature series like Contemporary Authors, the Dictionary of Literary Biography, and Contemporary Literary Criticism.  In general a good resource for undergraduates, it contains full-text journal articles, literary criticism, reviews, biographical information, and overviews for over 130,000 writers.

Theatre in Video from Alexander Street Press is a new database subscription that includes online versions of  performances of the world’s leading plays, together with film documentaries. Of special interest, it also includes the BBC Shakespeare Collection. You can show the video in a full-screen format, and can mark specific sections for quick access. We have acquired three additional JSTOR collections, so we now have all of the complete Arts & Sciences collections. As part of this acquisition I used the proceeds from a gift to buy the 58 titles in the JSTOR Language & Literature Collection. This literature collection was developed in partnership with the Modern Language Association and includes many core titles for which Michener Library had only incomplete or non-existent print runs.  In addition to the option of searching JSTOR directly, individual JSTOR titles are accessible through a Periodical Title search in The Source .

ENG 122 and 123 Instructors, 

This fall, the UNC Libraries invite you to schedule a library orientation session for your ENG 122 and 123 classes.  Our sessions entail bringing your students into the Michener Library to get hands on experience with the various resources- the Source Web Catalog and other electronic databases which they will be employing over the next four years.

Through the Core Library Instruction Program (CLIP), the Michener Library teaches the skills needed to begin to utilize the Library’s collections and services.  This program is articulated with the curricula of ID 108, English 122, and English 123 so that your students’ immediate need for research skills is met at the appropriate time.

The CLIP program is designed so that a student will progress from a standardized general tour of the library to advanced instruction sessions on the use of sophisticated information resources.  At the same time we also welcome the opportunity to work with you to design unique workshops for you and your students.

Between Two Worlds: Stories of Estrangement and Homecoming

Michener Library, with the support of the American Library Association, and Nextbook, is presenting Let’s Talk About It: Jewish Literature, a scholar-led reading and discussion program for readers interested in exploring Jewish literature and culture. 

The series is open to all adults in the community and is led by Dr. Jeraldine R. We are pleased to announce that beginning September 1, 2006, you will have access to the JSTOR Arts & Sciences I Collection and the Mathematics & Statistics Collection through the UNC Libraries’ web site.

JSTOR is a not-for-profit organization that has a dual mission to “create and maintain a trusted archive of important scholarly journals and to provide access to these journals as widely as possible.” Thus, the two collections acquired by UNC provide complete backfiles of 161 titles starting with the first issues. However, given JSTOR’s archival mission, there is a gap, usually 1 to 5 years, between the most recent issue and the back issues available in JSTOR.

Individual titles from these collections are accessible through a Periodical Title search in The Source, our online catalog. When a search is performed in one of our article indexes, titles in this collection are also accessible through the “link to full-text” features.

In addition, you can access our full range of JSTOR titles through our Article Finder screen by navigating alphabetically to JSTOR.
